Goya Chanpuru

In Okinawa, May 8th is “Goya’s Day”. We combine sounds similar to Japanese sounds of 5 (go) and 8 (ya).

There is a dish called “Goya Chanpuru” in Okinawa cuisine using Goya.
Goya means bitter melon, and Chanpuru is “to mix”.
Both are words of Okinawa.

It is a dish which mixed(=chanpuru) Goya with tofu, pork and vegetables, so it is called “Goya Chanpuru”.
There are also many other Chanpuru foods. Yasai Chanpuru and Somin Champuru etc.

In Japan, Okinawa is famous for living long life. Goya has a lot of vitamins, the secret of living long life in Okinawa is believed to be eating a lot of Goya.

Recently it has become famous all over Japan and can be eaten in various places in Japan except Okinawa.

In the past it was very bitter and hard to get used to, but recent Goya got easier to eat with less bitterness.
(Still, people who are not used to eating will fell bitter.)
Let’s overcome the summer of hot Okinawa by eating Goya Chanpuru!
